What is clinical hypnosis?

Well, it’s definitely not magic, and it certainly isn’t mumbo jumbo either. Forget any notions of street and stage trickery for laughs and entertainment, clinical hypnosis is a serious business that uses powerful techniques to change habits or treat conditions that could be either physical or psychological in nature. Hypnosis is a state of focused concentration during which a person becomes less aware of his or her surroundings and their subconscious is wholly focused on bringing about positive changes to their behaviour, feelings and thoughts.

It’s a totally natural, safe experience, and the centuries-old technique is being used increasingly as an alternative to orthodox medicine and psychotherapy. Our minds work on two levels, the conscious – where we make decisions, think and act – and the subconscious, which controls our habits. Hypnosis allows therapists like me to communicate with the client’s subconscious mind, which is why it can be so quick and easy to change the habits of a lifetime.

Hypnotists like me place a person into a trance-like deep state of relaxation, not unlike being absorbed in a book or meditation, and this allows the subject to look inside themselves and draw on their inner strength to regain control and make changes. During a hypnotic state a person is more likely to accept and implement suggestions of how to change their thoughts and behaviour. We will use questions and suggestions to guide you into thinking positively about changing the way you feel and behave – there’s no risk of losing control or being manipulated, and you won’t be asleep or unconscious. In fact, most people can’t tell the difference between their hypnotised and waking state.
Hypnotherapy and hypnosis can tackle a huge range of issues, from giving up smoking, to losing weight, managing pain, dealing with phobias, fear and anxiety. If you’re unsure whether it might help you, just contact me and I’ll give you some honest advice on what I can do to support you. It usually only requires a small number of sessions at my clinics in Ottawa or Toronto to turn problems around and get you on the road to recovery.

In Canada, there is no formal licensing system to govern hypnotherapists, so it’s important to work with a professional who has plenty of training and experience. Here are full details of my qualifications and training.
